The concept of identifying stones with zodiac signs, birthdays and other occasions is an ancient one, but one in which the details vary widely across
cultures, traditions and time. The Victorians, in particular, did much to popularise the idea of birthstones.
There is no true definitive list of stones, and, when you study the sources, it is possible to come up with many, sometimes competing, alternatives.
